With news reports about cherry blossom forecasts becoming more frequent these days, the Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbo Park (Ikebukuro, Tokyo) is currently hosting the "Tenbo Park Sakura Festival," an event where visitors can be surrounded by cherry blossoms in full bloom and other spring flowers. The festival runs until May 10th (Sunday).
Based on the concept of "365 days of park-like weather," Tenbo Park is a "park in the sky" located 60 stories above ground, 251 meters above sea level.
From the 360-degree panoramic view, you can see not only Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, and the skyscrapers of Shinjuku, but also, on a clear day, Mount Fuji and Mount Tsukuba rising above the Tanzawa Mountains, and the Nikko mountain range. At night, the glittering city lights create a romantic atmosphere. Although it is indoors, you can lie down on the artificial turf and net play equipment, or eat a packed lunch on a picnic blanket (*), making it a park-like place to relax, and it is especially popular with families with children.
(*)…On weekdays from 11:00 to 14:00, you can eat and drink food and drinks that you bring with you in the designated area.
Since its reopening in 2023, the facility has featured decorations that reflect the changing seasons and a variety of events throughout the year, and this year marks the third time the spring "Sakura Festival" has been held.
Unlike last year, when the decorations were solely cherry blossoms, this year, in addition to cherry blossoms, a variety of other colorful spring flowers have been chosen as the main decorations . While they are mostly elaborate artificial flowers, some real flowers such as tulips, marguerite laurel, and wisteria have been planted, as well as real branches and trunks of Somei Yoshino cherry trees, which are said to have originated in Toshima Ward, so a relaxing effect can also be expected.
At this thrilling and popular photo spot where you can get right up to the window, cherry blossom bouquets and traditional Japanese umbrellas are available as photo props. Swing-shaped benches and other items are also adorably decorated with flowers, making it a great spot for commemorative photos during graduation and entrance ceremony seasons.
After 5 PM, the lively daytime atmosphere completely transforms. The illumination creates a fantastical and photogenic space. A major attraction of the nighttime "Sakura Festival" is the free rental of lanterns with original designs from Tenbo Park. Relying on the soft light of the lanterns, you can enjoy a special moment gazing at the exceptional collaboration of the cherry blossoms at night and the night view spreading out below. It would be wonderful to spend such an elegant time, unlike any other, with friends or your loved one.
Furthermore, the aroma that normally fills the park will also be specially designed for the event. During the day, they will be using "Sunshine," a citrus scent that evokes the warmth of the sun, a blend of orange, lemon, chamomile, and yuzu. At night, they will be using "Iki," an aroma with an intellectual atmosphere that uses cypress and rosalina.
At "Tenbo Park CAFÉ" located within the park, a limited-time cherry blossom viewing menu is available.
"Spring Colors Chirashi Bento" (980 yen)
"Springtime Snack Box" (980 yen)
"Spring's Arrival Parfait" (1,000 yen)
"Sakura Peach Soda" (750 yen)
"Sakura Peach Soda Float" (800 yen) *All prices include tax
The "Spring Colorful Chirashi Bento" is a picnic-style meal featuring colorful chirashi rice topped with popular side dishes for children, such as octopus-shaped sausages and shrimp gratin. The "Spring Bloom Snack Box" includes classic snacks like skin-on potatoes, chicken nuggets, and mixed nuts, accented with cherry blossom rice crackers and cherry blossom salt for a spring-like touch. You get a 50 yen discount when ordering with an alcoholic drink, making it perfect for a quick drink after work.
The "Spring's Arrival Parfait" is a dessert that lets you enjoy the harmony of gently sweet amazake agar jelly, refreshing peach jelly, and slightly bitter matcha whipped cream. The cherry blossom mochi and sweet potato sticks on top add a touch of personality, making this small yet satisfying Japanese-Western fusion parfait.
From 5 PM onwards, four types of "Night Cherry Blossom Soda" (750 yen each), topped with cherry blossom-shaped jelly, will be available for purchase. Each comes with a light-up coaster (which must be returned), so if many visitors pick up this soda, it could be enjoyed as part of an interactive light-up display along with the lanterns.
During the "Sakura Festival," there will be plenty of spring-themed events and workshops that families can enjoy together. These include a balloon art performance by Rikkyo University's performance circle "Dream Box," a concert featuring songs and accordion by the unit "Kokoro Sekai," body painting with cherry blossom and spring motifs, and cherry blossom bag charm making. The "Tenbo Park Cherry Blossom Festival" will be held until Sunday, May 10th. If you want to spend a relaxing time surrounded by blooming spring flowers without worrying about the weather or pollen, please come and visit.
