Autumn garden illumination concept "TERASU"

Every year, the autumn garden illuminations held at Toshima Ward's Mejiro Garden are enjoyed by many visitors. Though located in the city, the garden is surrounded by greenery and has a tranquil atmosphere. On calm days, the autumn leaves are reflected in the pond, creating a soothing space where you can enjoy the fantastical garden.
Starting this year, the annual illumination event has been renewed with the concept of "TERASU," with the keyword "together with the community."

Mejiro Garden has been carrying out various initiatives that make use of the characteristics of Japanese gardens, with the theme of a "town veranda" where local residents and visitors from outside can interact and take a breather. In addition, there are people in Toshima Ward who are active in a variety of fields, including community activities, and we have been promoting collaborative projects with these people.
Therefore, because Mejiro Garden is a place where autumn leaves are beautiful, we wanted to illuminate the trees and the people who are active in the community, and to make it even more useful as a town veranda (= terrace).
We named it "TERASU."

Specifically, as a first attempt, the lighting plan was designed to involve the local community.
With the cooperation of the Lighting Design School, plans created by students were decided by a vote of visitors. This year's light-up design theme is "Tatsutahime Dyeing Festival." The themes are "Cosmos" in September, "Susuki" in October, "Autumn Leaves" in November, and "Snow" in December. The scenery of each season will be projected through the light.
Additionally, lanterns made by students from the nearby Soen Nursery School in their creative expression classes will gently illuminate the ground beneath visitors' feet. Each handcrafted lantern incorporates a design from the "Monkiri Asobi" game, a game that has been passed down since the Edo period, adding a warm touch to the venue.
In addition to the illuminations, to make the evening even more enjoyable, we will also be offering food and drinks, holding Japanese musical instrument concerts, and holding yoga classes in the tea room.

◆We also recommend viewing the autumn leaves during the day.
The garden is not just lit up. You can also enjoy the autumn leaves between 9:00 and 17:00 with free admission.
