[Experience Report] The first standalone exhibition for the “Silent Hill” series, “EXHIBITION OF SILENT HILL 2,” is being held at Ikebukuro PARCO! Relive James’s story with a flashlight in hand.

The "EXHIBITION OF SILENT HILL 2," an exhibition that allows visitors to experience the world of the horror game "SILENT HILL 2," released by KONAMI in 2024, has opened at PARCO FACTORY on the 7th floor of Ikebukuro PARCO Main Building. The exhibition runs from July 24th (Fri) to August 17th (Mon), 2026.

*This report contains some spoilers regarding the exhibition content and the main game. Please be aware if you have not played the game or wish to enjoy the exhibition without any prior information.

An exhibition where you can immerse yourself in the world of 'SILENT HILL 2' through spatial art, video, and sound.

James, the protagonist, receives a letter from his wife Mary, who was supposed to have died three years ago, prompting him to visit Silent Hill, a town he and Mary once visited together.

However, Silent Hill, a place filled with memories of his late wife, was shrouded in a thick fog and had become a ghost town roamed by grotesque creatures.

Hoping to be reunited with his wife, he searches the town for clues, and eventually stumbles upon a truth.

The "SILENT HILL" series, a landmark psychological horror game, is considered one of Japan's leading game IPs in Europe and America. Among them, the second installment, "SILENT HILL 2" (2001), is widely regarded as the masterpiece.

In 2024, a fully remade version was released that retained the charm of the story while improving the graphics and sound, expanding the exploration area, and restructuring the combat system. It received a great response, with the total number of players worldwide exceeding 6 million.

This exhibition is the first standalone exhibition in the series based on this remake . It allows visitors to experience the universal emotional structures of "sin," "loss," and "self-deception" that symbolize the game, through spatial art, video, and sound.

I've actually experienced the exhibition, so I'll share what the venue was like and some things to keep in mind when viewing it.

In the game, the protagonist James uses a flashlight to explore the city, and at this exhibition, each visitor is lent a flashlight upon entry. At first, I wondered "why?", but I understood once I stepped inside the venue. First, there is a zone where the game's opening movie is shown, and beyond that, a dark exhibition space unfolds, themed after facilities and items that appear in the game.

Venue scenery

In the venue, I spotted a radio that you can obtain early in the story, right near the entrance.

The unfolding of each zone follows the flow of the main game, starting with "Bar Neely's," then "Woodside Apartments," "Heaven's Night," and "Brookhaven Hospital." In other words, visitors will relive the story, illuminating places of interest with their flashlights, just like James.

Regarding this presentation, Hiroki Oishi of PARCO GAMES, the project planner, commented, "Those who have played the game before will feel nostalgic, and we hope that those who haven't played it before will enjoy the game's world as a unique exhibition experience."

Each zone features numerous exhibits including concept art, in-game assets, and making-of videos, some of which are being shown for the first time at this exhibition. However, unlike typical art exhibitions, each exhibit does not have a detailed caption. The exhibition is designed to immerse visitors in the world of "SILENT HILL 2," and supplementary textual information is kept to a minimum. Also, much of the text is in English, so those who want to fully understand the content are advised to use a smartphone translation function.

The role of the light isn't just to provide visibility. In fact, the ominous radio noise that signals the approach of creatures (enemies) in the film is also echoing in the venue. That means they're here too… Visitors will be tasked with using their lights to search for "Lying Figures," "Mannequins," "Pyramid Heads," and other objects, and collecting "certain numbers" that they indicate.

"An 'encounter with creatures' is also a theme of this exhibition. Since this is an exhibition about a game, unlike the manga and anime exhibitions that PARCO has handled in the past, we wanted to create something that would allow visitors to actively explore the venue. We can't have visitors wield weapons like James, but we hope they will enjoy the idea of repelling creatures by shining a flash on them," (Oishi).

The radio noise follows the specifications from the game, so those who have played it before may notice something that makes them go "oh!" Also, while the creatures are generally stationary, there are some unexpected effects, so don't let your guard down.

Venue scenery, three branching routes

Towards the end of the exhibition, you will choose one of three routes to proceed: "Self-deception and justification," "Sinking with guilt," or "Acknowledging guilt and reforming." This structure is reminiscent of the multi-ending structure of video games, and once you make a choice, there is no going back.

Within each zone, you'll also see the ending movies of different games. The more immersed you become in the exhibits up to this point, the more you'll be able to appreciate the beauty, the poignancy, and the various lingering emotions of the answer James arrived at. Also, don't miss the comments from the game development staff, specially provided for this exhibition, at the end of the video.

When asked why he chose "SILENT HILL 2" for the series' first solo exhibition, Oishi explained as follows:

"Among the series, this particular work is appealing because of its human drama that focuses on 'human emotions' and 'sin.' How do you confront the sins you have committed, how do you accept them, and what answers do you come up with? Because of this universal theme, even people who have not played the game can reflect on their own feelings through the exhibition and consider 'how would I react in that situation?' We chose '2' because we believe it is the work that will draw people most deeply into the experience as an interactive exhibition."

This story reminded me of the exhibit placed just before the branching point in the story, where letters and notes from the game were spread across an entire surface. Silent Hill 2 begins with a single letter, and as you trace the words of the past, you get closer to the truth. On the surface, these letters serve as guideposts for the exploration, but at the same time, they act as a mirror for James to confront his guilt. By presenting these fragmented words all at once, the exhibit forces visitors to come up with their own answers. I felt that this was the most symbolic and immersive presentation of the exhibition's purpose.

Also, be sure to check out the original merchandise!

Beyond the exhibition area was a merchandise corner. While the "SILENT HILL" series has previously had a limited range of official merchandise, this exhibition features the series' first comprehensive lineup of goods.

Many items that recreated items from the film, such as posters featuring a map of the city and postcards of "Lake Toluca," were available to delight fans. These items will continue to be available for purchase on PARCO's official e-commerce site, "ONLINE PARCO," even after the event ends , so those who are unable to attend can rest assured.

Next to the merchandise area, a door will appear that can be unlocked using numbers collected from the creatures. We can't reveal what kind of space lies inside, but there are goods available for purchase only to visitors who complete the mission, so please give it a try.
