* Application period: April 5th (Monday) -May 5th (Wednesday / holiday) *
A baby was born on February 1st at the popular couples "Mahalo" and "Raja" of the Sunshine Aquarium (Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Director: Katsushi Maruyama), and they are growing steadily. Currently, the state of child-rearing is open to the public in the outdoor area marine garden "Waterside of otters" aquarium.
* You may not be able to see it depending on the time.
At the Sunshine Aquarium, we will hold a "Call for Names for Small-clawed Owls" to decide the names of the three babies from April 5th (Monday) to May 5th (Wednesday / holiday).
Each person can apply with their name and their thoughts, and the breeding staff of the Sunshine Aquarium will decide the names of the three animals.
We will apply online so that people far away can think of their names, and the results will be announced on May 26th (Wednesday), 2021 "World Otter Day".
As a result of the selection, otter goods will be presented to the three people whose names are selected. (If a name with multiple applications is selected, 3 people will be elected by lottery.)
Please apply for the perfect name for your cute babies.

<Characteristics of 3 animals (as of 3/14)>
- One-month-old knack for the growth of three baby sisters
Each of the three small-clawed otter babies weighed about 1.5 times faster each week since they were born on February 1. The weight after birth was about 50g (estimated), but it grew to about 500g each 45 days after birth.
The weight of the three animals is increasing at about the same rate, and it is speculated that the mother Mahalo may be feeding evenly while recognizing the individual.
- Father Raja's enthusiastic child-rearing
In this child-rearing, when the mother Mahalo leaves the child, the father Raja quickly takes over the child-rearing, hugs the child to warm it up and sleeps together, and the parents cooperate to raise the child.
Perhaps Raja is a father's instinct, and there are also behaviors such as a gatekeeper to protect the safety of the baby so that the nest is not dangerous, and a blanket or wrapping behavior to maintain the body temperature of the baby. He is showing annoying appearance.
Even more surprisingly, on the first day of childbirth, the fathers cooperate in raising children, such as the appearance of feeding fish being carried to the lactating Mahalo and the frequent carrying of grass for nesting. The figure was also seen.
Not only the mother but also the father loves his beloved daughter, and the facial expressions of the child show that he is relieved.
The breeding staff are also impressed every day by the first time in Ikumen of his father Raja. When I see my parents raising their children day and night, I feel their love again.
● Overview of baby river otter, parents “Mahalo” and “Raja” ●
Child: Name undecided Five were born on the night of February 1, 2021. All three are female. (2 died)
Father: Raja June 5, 2015 A 5-year-old born in a zoo in Malaysia. Cowardly and cautious.
Mother: Mahalo 6 years old born on August 7, 2014 at the Sunshine Aquarium. Naughty and curious.
* Mahalo and Raja will be exhibited together in the "Waterside of Otters" tank from 2018. I soon became friends and witnessed a lovely appearance.
Since I gave birth for the first time in 2018, breeding has not been successful.
This time, with the thorough support of the breeding staff, while continuing to manage the weight of the mother, collect data, and observe, we made preparations for childbirth and were blessed with child treasure on February 1, 2021.
Since the birth of the baby, the breeding staff has left the child-rearing to their parents as much as possible, and the mother and father are working hard to respond to this.
At the Sunshine Aquarium, we keep parents so that they can display and show them as close to nature as possible.
~ Thoughts on recruiting names as a breeding staff at Sunshine Aquarium ~ The night before giving birth, a few staff members quietly monitored her mother Mahalo's swelling and groaning over and over again, perhaps due to labor pains, on a surveillance camera. I was looking forward to it now or now because of the swelling of the belly, which is clearly not one. When I opened the lid, 5 pups were born. Unfortunately, two of them have died, but the other three have grown up quickly and are now running around on their own feet to the point of annoying their parents. Every time, they are held by their parents and returned to the hive, but all three seem to be curious and energetic pups. While there is not much bright news about the new coronavirus infection, the three animals that are growing up innocently and vigorously are exactly the "sun". In order for many people to know more about the creature called the river otter, I hope that the three animals will continue to grow vigorously while receiving a lot of love from their parents. |
