Currently, the "36th Anniversary Exhibition of the Kumagai Morikazu Museum" is being held at the Kumagai Morikazu Museum of Art, Toshima Ward.
Approximately 100 works by Morikazu Kumagai (1880-1977), a painter who drew small creatures and familiar nature with his own eyes (48 oil paintings, 53 sumi-e, calligraphy, etc.) are on display. Until Sunday, June 27th.
The Kumagai Morikazu Museum is a museum founded by his second daughter, Kaya Kumagai, on the site of the former residence of Chihaya, Toshima-ku, where he lived for 45 years until Morikazu Kumagai died. This year marks the 36th special exhibition held every spring after the anniversary of the opening of the museum.
At the 36th Anniversary Exhibition, you can see 14 oil paintings from the Gifu Prefectural Museum of Art, such as "Morning Hajimari," "Mitake," "Bear Skin," "Yakibanokaeri," and "Zinnia." The first exhibition room focuses on borrowed works, the second exhibition room focuses on oil paintings in the collection, and the third floor, which is usually a gallery for rent, displays books, sumi-e, and croquis.
In his later years, Morikazu Kumagai often drew casual things such as flowers, birds, and landscapes. You can follow the life of the painter over 1997 while watching the works from his youth to his last years. The work used as the poster for this exhibition is "Morning Hajimari" (1969 / Gifu Prefectural Museum of Art), when Morikazu was 89 years old.
A staff member of the museum says, "You can only see the works of the museums in the distance once a year during the special exhibition. Please go out." No advance reservation is required.

■ About the Kumagai Morikazu Museum
Opened as a private museum in 1985. In November 2007, Toshima Ward became a ward museum with the donation of 153 works by Morikazu Kumagai (including 23 oil paintings) from his second daughter, Kaya Kumagai, in order to see his works in this place for a long time. The permanent exhibition (year-round) during the period that is not a special exhibition is in the exhibition rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors, where about 60 items such as oil paintings, sumi-e, and books are exhibited. * During the special exhibition, the exhibition will be on the 3rd floor. The facility has only stairs from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor.
